Ways to Help
And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest. (Matt 9:35-38 KJV)
Serving God and neighbor at Christ our Anchor is as easy as 1, 2, 3. Everyone — rich or poor — has something to offer at God’s potluck. Whether you have money, time, or a little of both there are ways you can directly alleviate poverty and strengthen God’s kingdom.
1. Work one Saturday a Month
Even if you only have a few hours free each month, you can be of immense help to an apprentice taking the bold steps needed to forge a better life. Our greatest need at Christ our Anchor is having Christian men and women ready to work alongside our apprentices.
When an apprentice joins us on Wednesday evenings, we worship together and discuss upcoming jobs. It is critical that we always have mentors “on-call” every Saturday to assist the apprentices with the jobs discussed and assigned on Wednesday night. If we don’t have enough volunteers on-call, we’ll have to turn someone away just as they are taking a bold step of positive movement.
So, what does it mean to sign-up to be “on-call” for a Saturday? Simply this… set aside one Saturday a month from 9a-12p. A volunteer from Christ our Anchor will contact you on the Thursday morning before your assigned Saturday with all the information you need to volunteer (i.e. times, job details, list of tasks, apprentice’s name, etc.). Also, if there is not a job to be done on your Saturday, we will contact you by Thursday morning to let you know.

2. Contribute Jobs
One of the easiest ways to help us is by saving jobs around your home or business for us to glean from. If your yard is a mess or there’s a back room at your office that could use some help, we can be of assistance. Raking leaves, painting fences, trimming shrubs, washing sidewalks, and organizing a shed are all great jobs for us. We recommend paying $30/hour for our work to keep our ministry solvent.
Jobs don’t have to be big for us to take them. We generally target jobs that are around 2 hours, but we more than welcome larger jobs up to 4 hours for our more experienced apprentices.

3. Join us for Worship
Another great way to serve at Christ our Anchor is to join us for worship on Wednesday evenings. We call our weekly worship meeting The Potluck. We meet at 5:30p at First Wesleyan Church on Shelby Ave. The Potluck only lasts about an hour, but it is critical to our mission. It is a time of fellowship where apprentices are welcomed, friendships form, prayer concerns are shared, and everyone worships God together.
Coming to The Potluck on Wednesdays only requires your presence. Apprentices visiting our mission often don’t have family support and are lacking in positive relationships. We spend the first thirty minutes on Wednesday simply talking over snacks & coffee. Our conversations are supportive, but also focus on loving encouragement to help our apprentices take brave steps towards full-time employment and housing. We end our time together in a traditional Anglican spoken Evening Prayer service.
